Description
AM-ZOLID is an oral antibacterial preparation containing Linezolid, an antibiotic belonging to the oxazolidinone class.
Linezolid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by acting on the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of the bacterial initiation complex required for protein production.
It is used for selected infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including certain strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE).
The oral suspension provides a dosage form for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or require individually calculated doses.
Therapeutic Indications
Reference prescribing information includes hospital-acquired pneumonia, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated and uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections, and VRE infections caused by specified susceptible organisms. Linezolid is not indicated for Gram-negative infections.
Dosage & Administration
At 100mg/5mL, the prepared suspension provides 20mg of Linezolid per mL.
Reference dosing depends on infection type, age, and body weight. For example, many serious approved adult indications use 600mg every 12 hours, while pediatric regimens are often weight-based. The final dose, duration and preparation instructions must follow the prescriber’s directions and AM-ZOLID’s approved insert.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, abdominal discomfort and altered taste. Serious reactions may include thrombocytopenia, anemia, peripheral or optic neuropathy, lactic acidosis and serotonin syndrome.
Contraindications & Precautions
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Linezolid and in patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors or who have taken them within the previous two weeks, according to U.S. labeling.
Monitor complete blood counts weekly during treatment. Interactions with SSRIs such as escitalopram can result in serotonin syndrome. Care is also required with medicines affecting blood pressure, in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, and during prolonged treatment.
Reconstitution: Follow the AM-ZOLID-specific instructions for the exact quantity of water, storage conditions, and shelf life after mixing. Instructions for a different manufacturer’s bottle volume must not be substituted.
