Description

AM-ZOLID 400mg Tablets contain Linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic used to treat selected infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria.

Linezolid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of the functional initiation complex.

It has activity against certain resistant organisms, including MRSA and VRE, although the appropriate dose depends on the infection and organism.

Therapeutic Indications

The U.S. reference regimen specifically includes oral Linezolid 400mg for uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections in adults caused by designated susceptible bacteria. Other infections generally require different dosing schedules. Pakistan’s online DRAP product-characteristics records also document Linezolid 400mg tablet formulations, but not specifically AM-ZOLID.

Dosage & Administration

For uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections in adults, U.S. reference information lists 400mg orally every 12 hours for 10–14 days.

This regimen must not be generalized to pneumonia, VRE infections or complicated infections, which commonly require 600mg dosing in adults. The treating physician must determine the correct dose and duration.

Side effects

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache and dizziness. Serious reactions include decreased platelet counts, anemia, peripheral or optic neuropathy, lactic acidosis and serotonin syndrome.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with Linezolid hypersensitivity or recent or current use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Weekly complete blood count monitoring is recommended. Review possible interactions with antidepressants, including escitalopram, and medicines that affect blood pressure.

Linezolid should only be used for infections proven or strongly suspected to involve susceptible bacteria.
